E.K. JANAKI AMMAL.Dr.

Dr. E.K. Janakiammal (Edavaleth Kakkat Janaki Ammal) was a celebrated Indian botanist known for her groundbreaking work in plant genetics and cytogenetics. She made significant contributions to the development of high-yielding varieties of sugarcane, eggplant, and magnolias through her research on chromosome numbers in plants. Despite limited resources, she achieved a doctorate in science during the British India era and her research continues to enhance agricultural and horticultural crops today. The Magnolia cobos Janakiammal is a rare plant named in her honor, showcasing her research success. Janakiammal graduated with an honors degree in botany from Queen Mary’s College in Madras in 1921. While teaching at Madras Women's Christian College, she received a Barbour scholarship to the University of Michigan in the United States. From there she obtained her MSc in 1925 and his D.Sc (present day Ph.D.) in 1931. After returning to India, Dr. Janakiammal continued her teaching career and research in cytology, joining Maharajas College of Science in Thiruvananthapuram as a professor. In 1934, she joined as a geneticist at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore. Because of her contributions, she is often referred to as the ‘woman who sweetened India's sugar cane'. She also worked at the prestigious John Innes Horticultural Institution in London and the Royal Horticultural Society before returning to India. She also served the Botanical Survey of India under the invitation of Jawaharlal Nehru.
She held various roles within the Government of India, including Head of the Central Botanical Laboratory in Allahabad and Special Duty Officer at the Regional Research Laboratory in Jammu. Janaki Ammal also briefly worked at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Trombay. Government of India honoured her by awarding 'Padma Shri' in 1957 for her contributions to plant cytology.
She passed away on 7 th February 1984.

 




JANAKY AMMA.P, JUSTICE

Born on 22 April 1920. Father: Anjattu Kumara Kaimal. Mother: Kunhilekshmy Amma Justice Janaky Amma adorned high positions in the field of law and justice. She came to the field at a time when women from noble families rarely accept this profession. She was an eminent judge and social worker. She started her career as an advocate and later appointed as District Judge. She was appointed as High Court Judge in 1974 as the second women Judge of a High Court. She was the founder President of Nature Cure Association of Eranakulam. She was the first woman Municipal Chairperson of Travancore-Cochin. She passed away on 29 June 2005.



JAYAKUMAR.K.

Born in 1952. Father: Krishnan Nair.M. Mother: Sulochana Devi. K.Jaya Kumar, IAS is a known poet, lyrist, orator and an excellent administrator. He joined IAS in 1978 and now serving as the Chief Secretary to the Goernment of Kerala. He enriched Malayalam films through his meaningful songs. He translated Rabindranatha Tagore's poems and works of Khaleel Jibran into Malayalam.

JOHN ABRAHAM

Born at Kuttanad in Alappuzha District. Father: V.T.Abraham. John Abraham was a celebrated cine director who produced and directed a handful of films classified under neo-realistic films. He was the Gold Medal winner of the Pune Film Institute. He founded Oddessa, a film society, which bring film to the common people. He used to make films out of money collected from poor rural folk and exhibited before them on free of cost. Cheriyachante Kroorakrithyangal, Agraharathil Kazhuthai, Amma Ariyan are some of his films.



JOHN.A.J.

Born on July 18, 1893 at Thalayolaparambu. A.J.John (Anaparambil Joseph John) started career as an advocate. In 1931 he joined congress and became a leader in the freedom struggle. In 1936 he was elected to the Travancore Legislative Assembly from Vaikom. Owing to his leadership in freedom struggle, he was imprisoned two times in 1938. In 1948 he was elected as a member to the Travancore Legislative Assembly and became the Speaker. In 1949 he had sworn in as the Finance Minister. In the elections held on 1951 he was elected from Poonjar constituency and he was chosen as the Chief Minister. Again in 1955 he held the office of the Minister for Finance and Home. He was appointed as the Governor of erstwhile Madras state (Now Tamil Nadu). He died on September 30, 1957.





JOSEPH MUNDASSERY

Born on 1903 July 17. Joseph Mundassery is the personality who marked his footprints in the history of Malayalam literature, education, social and political fields. He was an eminent teacher, renowned literary critic, an outstanding orator, and an able administrator. Joseph Mundassery was the first Education Minister of the Kerala State. On assuming office, he introduced the famous Education Bill in the Kerala Legislative Assembly suggesting radical reformations in the field of education. This bill aggravated communal forces and mangers of private educational institutions, which ultimately led to Vimochana Samaram (liberation struggle) and dismissal of the E.M.S. ministry, the first Communist Government elected through ballot in the world. Joseph Mundassery was the first Vice-Chancellor of the Cochin University of Science & Technology. There are more than 45 literary works at his credit. Kozhinja Elakal is his autobiography. Mattoli, Anthareeksham, Kavyapeedika, Prayanam, Natakantham Kavithwam are some of his works on literary criticism.





JOSEPH.M.C.

Born in 1887. M.C.Jospeh is a known rationalist and leader of rationalism in Kerala. He boldly questioned malevolent rituals, superstitious beliefs and irrational deeds prevalent in the society. He always maintained the belief that reason and logic are the sources of knowledge and truth. He led a life in accordance with logical terms and put into practice what he said in his life. He believed that unification of mankind could be attained through mixed marriages of different castes and classes. This conviction prompted him to form AKhila Kerala Misra Vivaha Sanghom (an association of mixed married couple of the state). He published a magazine titled Yukthivadi to propagate his ideas. Yukthi Prakasanam and Yukthivadi are his two works about rationalism. He died in 1981 and his dead body was given to the Medical College for educational purpose according to his last wish.





JOTHYDEV.K, Dr.

Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev,a research diabetologist is an alumnus of Government Medical College, Trivandrum and Mayo Clinic USA. His outstanding contributions to the field of diabetes include cost effective use of technology in multi disciplinary diabetes care integrating with tele-medicine. His pioneering works in insulin pump therapy, Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Diabetes Tele Management System won him global recognition.(www.jothydev.net). He has numerous scientific publications and presentations to his credit.He is the first speaker from Kerala at the prestigious American Diabetes Association and the International Diabetes Federation. He is a much sought after speaker and has delivered innumerable lectures for doctors across the world. He reinforces the importance of diabetes awareness and education through more than thousands of television programs and educational articles in several magazines. Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev is the only child of the legendary novelist and social reformer P. Kesavadev and novelist Smt. Seethalekshmi Dev. He lives with wife Ms. Sunitha Jothydev and only son Krishnadev Jothydev at Mudavanmugal,Trivandrum.

JOY,V.P. Dr.

Dr. V.P. Joy, also known as Joy Vazhayil, is a distinguished administrator, accomplished author, and profound philosopher. With a background in Electronics & Communication Engineering from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, Joy went on to earn his M.B.A. from the University of Birmingham, followed by an M.Phil., from the Punjab University. His academic journey culminated in a doctorate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and a prestigious Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in the Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University.
Beginning his career as a Scientist/Engineer at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram in 1985, Joy later transitioned to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), serving as the Sub-Collector of Palakkad in 1989. Throughout his illustrious career, he held various administrative roles, ascending to the position of Chief Secretary of the Government of Kerala. Additionally, he has served as Secretary to the Government of India and Chairman of numerous public sector undertakings at both the Central and State levels.
In addition to his administrative proficiency, Dr. Joy is a prolific writer, with a diverse body of literary works encompassing poems, short stories, novels, translations, and research papers. His research articles and writings delve into topics ranging from energy policy to the philosophy of education, mind, and metaphysics. Notably, his translation of the Upanishads into Malayalam stands out as a significant contribution to philosophical literature. Dr. Joy's literary achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards such as the S.K. Pottakkad Award, Ulloor Award, and Akshaya Sahithya Award.
Currently, Dr. Joy holds the esteemed position of honorary professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Palakkad, where he continues to inspire and educate future generations with his wealth of knowledge and experience.
